• Southern California is bracing for a dangerous and prolonged heatwave starting Friday, 2 October
• The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles County and Orange County, effective from 10 a.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach 90°F (32°C) along the coast and up to 105°F (40.5°C) in the valleys. Saturday is forecasted to be the hottest day, with temperatures rising 15-20°F above normal. The heatwave is expected to persist through next week, with only slight relief on Sunday. Overnight temperatures will remain high, limiting cooling opportunities.

Impact & Risks

The prolonged heatwave poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health conditions. The NWS warns that the relentless heat could lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The combination of high daytime temperatures and above-normal overnight lows will exacerbate the situation, leaving little respite from the heat. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has emphasised the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
